Stop The Bull Ship
April 2005

Please access the following site for new undercover footage obtained by CIWF re live animal exports to NON EU nations  .....  http://www.ciwf.org/stopthebullship/images.html

If you believe, like we do, that it is morally unacceptable for taxpayers' money to be used to fuel a trade that routinely inflicts great suffering on animals, then please support CIWF's campaign to...
Around 200,000  live cattle, many of them bulls, are sent by ship each year from the European Union (EU) to the Middle East . The majority of live cattle exported from the EU for slaughter are transported to the Lebanon  their journey can take as long as 10 days.

The animals suffer long and stressful sea journeys, only to be brutally slaughtered on arrival. Current EU legislation appears to be frequently ignored, even while the animals are still on EU territory.

European authorities have no control over what happens to cattle once they are released into free circulation in a non-EU country, and it is therefore impossible to protect their welfare upon arrival in Lebanon.

Most of the animals are slaughtered without stunning  their throats are cut while they are fully conscious and they are left to bleed to death. Even this is often performed with additional torment, as the cows are strung up by one leg, so that their heads drag on the floor, before their throats are cut.

On average, 231 Euro (around £160) of your money is paid for each animal exported, not to the farmer who has reared them, but to the dealer who exports them.

Dealers are encouraged to send more and more 'bull ships' because the EU subsidises the trade, using around 60 million Euro (over £41 million) of taxpayers' money each year.

Joanna Lumley launches the new campaign at the European Parliament in Brussels today, Wednesday 6 th April, to an audience of MEPS.
