Sending dogs to China
We have had more reports of people wanting to buy dogs to send to China as pets and showdogs - especially the collie, border collie, samoyed, Bernese mountain dogs, Newfoundland and St Bernard type breeds. Please do not take these inquiries as legitimate, even if they come from "sweet old Kiwi couples". Any dogs sold to these people (and I am ashamed to say some New Zealanders have abandoned any morality they may have had and joined forces with scumbag dealers in the pursuit of money offered) are destined for the dog skin, fur and meat markets.
By law the Chinese people may not own or import any dog over 12 inches high as a pet or for show. Larger dogs are usually smuggled over the borders in atrocious conditions piled high in cages on trucks and usually there are losses to heat and sickness with no water or food available.
If they make the trip alive they go straight to the dealers where they are either processed straight away or kept to breed from for a while before being processed.
If there are any breeders out there who have been pressured to sell their dogs for sending to China as "pets" please email me with as many details as you can remember: editor@k9magazinefree.com or inquire through the SPCA or the Kennel Club.

A Song For The Animals
I Am The Owner Of This Coat
by
Maria Daines & Paul Killington
* How would it feel to have no power to stop a very frightening and painful thing happening to you? How would it feel to cry and not be heard? How would it feel to be crammed into a box with say 30 other beings, and then go on a long journey with no food or water... How would it feel to reach the end of that journey and be thrown from the top of a truck? And how would it feel to then be beaten and skinned? And how would it feel if you were still alive...?
If you believe fur should be worn by animals and not by people... If you believe the fur trade is as dead as all the helpless animals caught up in it, then please sign the petition to give these poor creatures a voice and a chance to live.
Singers/songwriters/musicians/artists, we DO have a voice, and we can use it!!!
Please help to stop the fur trade.
Best Wishes,
Maria & Paul

Dear President Hu,
One year ago, we wrote to urge you to put an end to the atrocities that are routinely perpetuated against fur-bearing animals in China. We asked you to open your eyes and your heart and ban the most egregious practices of the Chinese fur trade, including live skinning. However, China has thus far failed to enact even a single law that would protect the welfare of animals in China.
You have by now surely seen the videos documenting animals at fur farms in Hebei province, where animals are clubbed, beaten, slammed to the ground and then skinned alive. You must have seen the raccoon dog, lying on a heap of bloody carcasses after having his own skin ripped from his body as he stared into the camera blinking and whimpering for several minutes before at last nature mercifully released him to death's embrace. And yet, China continues to permit these acts of torture to continue.
Mahatma Ghandi once famously said that "[t]he greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." Viewed by this standard, China's true weakness, smallness, and vulnerability become apparent. We urge you to recognize the damage being done to China's international reputation. China's success in the world economy is precariously resting on the ignorance of consumers and the willfull blindness of other nations. However, the violence committed on animals in China has gained the attention of consumers and world leaders alike. The world will no longer tolerate China's ruthless brutalization of animals.
We urge you to show mercy and compassion for the weak, the powerless, the voiceless, the innocent, and immediately enact a comprehensive set of animal welfare laws that would criminalize acts of torture such as live skinning of any animal. Until China takes serious measures to protect the welfare of its fur-bearing animals, we are calling on compassionate people from all nations to boycott Chinese commerce, tourism and the 2008 Olympic Games.
Sincerely,
International Anti-Fur Coalition
